The Afters

Look at that! Such a cool design from my friend Dillon Coleman. He made the original design and will be working on the cover for book two!

Now reading: Abhorsen by Garth Nix. The finale of the Abhorsen trilogy and the conclusion of my books involving necromancy streak, this is a young adult series that was not afraid of brutality. Book two Lireal was still my favorite. I’m still out off by the first novel being about a one person and then the next two being about a different person. Very odd plot choice in my opinion but doesn’t detract enough from the world and characters to keep me from enjoying this series. #amreading #readmore #amreadingya #bookstagram
Now reading: Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir. Second in the Locked Tomb series and second in my heart. Sadly not as groundbreaking as the first as this one is a bit like reading Memento. It jumps around and is purposefully confusing (for plot reasons that eventually make sense). It just made for a slog going in. Despite that, this is still a richly inhabited novel filled to the brim with beautiful language and more words for bones and body parts than I ever knew existed. It sounds like the author REALLY studied up on her anatomy before going in and I for one applaud the hell out of that. But I am for sure not done with this series. #amreading #harrowtheninth #amreadingscifi #bookstagram #readmore
Now reading: Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir. It truly is hard for me to put into words how thoroughly this book blew me away. This is a combination of science fiction and fantasy that few rarely pull off with the amount of style Muir has here. The name of the game is necromancy and I’ve learned so many new words for bones I didn’t even know existed. Plus there’s a smack talking, sword wielding badass as the hero. Oh and don’t forget the Clue-like mystery she must solve before the other houses get there first. Top notch world building that doesn’t hold your hand and isn’t afraid to get violent (or tell someone to go choke on a dick). This has more twists than soft serve ice cream and probably the best book I’ll read this year. #amreading #amreadingfantasy #amreadingscifi #readmore #bookstagram #gideontheninth #lockedtombseries
Now reading: The Lost Village by Camilla Sten. Found this in the horror section but it really should rather be in the thriller section as the “horror” isn’t very scary. Of the two plots I only cared about one as the group of filmmakers trying to make a documentary about the disappearance of an entire Swedish town was not that interesting. Lots of characters make pretty dumb choices and the is it or is it not a ghost conundrum never hit home. There’s certainly a complete plot here but nothing that held my interest for too long. #amreading #bookstagram #readmore
Now reading: Lirael by Garth Nix. Second in the Abhorsen series but first (so far) in my heart. Give me a YA book with a sad teen who slowly learns magic any day of the week and I’ll eat it right up. Funnily enough, half the story follows a prince, son of the main character of the first book and I couldn’t care less about his tale, at least until his talking cat shows up. Still enjoying this series’ magic system of necromancers, summoning the dead, and traveling to the gates of death. Nix isn’t afraid to show real horror and terror in these books ostensibly meant for children and I applaud him for it. #bookstagram #readmore #amreading #amreadingfiction
Now reading: Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. Man this book was HYPED and I’m glad to report that it pretty much lives up to the praise. Great writing, a main character you really feel and root for, and the kind of storytelling that just keeps you hooked. Wouldn’t be surprised if high schoolers in the future are reading this. Only part I didn’t like were the two sheriffs who basically do what I’m calling foodsposition where they just spout exposition whilst getting, thinking about, or eating food. Otherwise, amazing. #readmore #amreadingfiction #bookstagram #wherethecrawdadssing
